Effect of Ultraviolet Ray on the Activity of Anti-phage Serum

Abstract
The author studied on the action of ultraviolet ray(UV) to the anti-phage serum and obtained the following results.
The serum activity was destroyed by UV irradiation.
Some proteinic substances protected, in some degree, the serum from UV, while carbohydrates did not. The serum protecting activity of glutamic acid was very remarkable.
At pH 4.0, the serum was highly protected from UV, while, at pH 5.0~9.0, the serum was destroyed by UV as in distilled water.
The inactivating rate of serum by UV was smaller when the serum dose for UV irradiation was large than small.
The activity of UV irradiated-serum was much destroyed by keeping at 37¡ÆC for 30~60 minutes or aerating at 37?C, while the activity of normal antiserum was not changed by keeping at 37¡ÆC for 2 hours.
The inactivating rate of serum by UV was higher when the temperature of UV irradiation was 37¡ÆC than 4¡ÆC.
No any toxic substance to the phage and anti-phage serum was found even though the UV was irradiated to distilled water. The hydrogen peroxide protected much the antiserum from UV.
